Philosophy Summer Program for High School Students
Most high school students spend their days moving between obligations someone else designed: the AP syllabus, the practice test, the activity that looks right on an application. What they rarely get is unstructured intellectual time, the chance to sit with a genuinely interesting question and argue it out with people who care about the answer.
This philosophy summer program for high school students exists to give them exactly that. Reason & Rationality is a selective, two-week residential experience where curious students discover what they actually think, and learn to say it well.
Think of it less as a class and more as an intellectual salon. Students cover philosophy, economics, and decision science: the core tools of clear thinking and rationality. They do it through conversation about some of the most fascinating ideas humans have ever wrestled with, guided by instructors who love the material and love talking about it with younger minds.
An Intellectual Salon, Not Another Line on a Résumé
The premise is simple. Bright students are hungry for real conversation and rarely get it. In most classrooms, the goal is to reach the right answer and move on. At Reason & Rationality, the goal is to think well together: to test an idea in real time, notice where it breaks, and revise your view without feeling like you lost.
That habit, thinking out loud with humility and precision, is both a practical skill and a genuine pleasure. Students practice it every day, in small groups, on questions that matter. Many find that discussions do not end when class does. They continue over meals, on walks, and late into the evening.
The 20 Big Ideas at the Center of the Program
The curriculum is built around twenty core topics in philosophy, economics, ethics, and decision-making. Rather than skim a hundred concepts, students go deep on a focused set of powerful tools they can carry into adult life.
Sample Topics Students Explore
- Free will and determinism, and whether the two can coexist
- Probabilistic arguments about big questions, including arguments for and against the existence of God
- The legitimacy of democratic institutions and the sources of political authority
- How economists and philosophers think about cost-benefit analysis, utility, and where those models stop working
- Moral reasoning, fairness, and the limits of consequentialist thinking
These are not lectures to memorize. They are starting points for argument, and the real learning happens in the exchange.
Taught by Instructors Who Do Not Disappear After Class
The program is led by Ph.D. students and young professors from Princeton, Harvard, and other excellent philosophy graduate programs. They are chosen for two things: command of the material, and a genuine talent for conversation with high school students.
What sets the experience apart is that faculty stay engaged beyond the classroom. You will find them in the lounge in the evening, still debating a point raised that morning. With a residential ratio of at least one instructor or staff member living alongside every five students, guidance and good conversation are always close by. You can meet the people who teach the program on the faculty page.
Foundation and Advanced Tracks
The program has two levels, so students can return and keep growing.
The Foundation Program
New students begin here, working through the twenty core topics that build a foundation in reasoning, probability, and moral and social thinking. Learn more on the Foundation Program page.
The Advanced Program
Returning students continue with twenty more complex questions, from the objectivity of value to the meaning of life. The Advanced Program now runs in all four sessions, so alumni can find a session that fits their summer. See the Advanced Program page.
Where the Program Takes Place
Reason & Rationality is held on the grounds of Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. The program is independent and is not affiliated with Princeton University. Students can attend as boarding students, living on campus with housing and all meals included, or as day students who join every class, activity, and meal.
Because the experience is built around close conversation, space is deliberately limited. For current session dates and tuition, visit the Apply page, where all the logistics live in one place.
Funding and Tuition Grants
Reason & Rationality wants cost to be a smaller barrier for families who value this kind of learning. Tuition grants are available, with priority for the children of professional educators. The grant process involves a short application and a brief conversation, and our team is glad to walk you through it. You can begin on the Apply page or reach us directly through our contact page.
