How to Apply: Admissions at Reason & Rationality
If your student is ready for two weeks of serious, joyful conversation about big ideas, the next step is simple. Knowing how to apply to Reason & Rationality takes only a few minutes to understand, because the process is short, rolling, and built to be low-friction. This page walks through exactly what to expect, from the first form to the final decision.
Reason & Rationality reviews applications on a rolling basis, which means there is no single deadline race. Applications are considered as they arrive, and spaces are limited, so the sooner a student applies, the more session options remain open.
The Application in Three Steps
The application itself is brief and asks for three straightforward things.
Step 1: Parent Information
Basic contact and family details, so the team can reach you and keep everything connected to the right student record.
Step 2: Student Information
The student's details, including school and high school graduation year. The program is open to students entering ninth grade through those who have just graduated.
Step 3: Program Selection
Choose the Foundation or Advanced Program, pick a session, and decide whether to board or attend as a day student. New students begin with Foundation; returning students continue in Advanced.
A refundable deposit is submitted with the application. Because the amount and current terms can change, they are listed on the Apply page.
Your Teacher Recommendation or Graded Essay
One thing sets this application apart: flexibility on supporting materials. A student can complete the application with either a confidential teacher recommendation or a graded essay, and neither has to be ready the moment you apply.
- Teacher recommendation: after you apply, you receive a unique link to share with a teacher, who submits the recommendation directly to Reason & Rationality.
- Graded essay: a previously graded paper can be uploaded at any point, before or after you submit the application.
This flexibility means a student never has to wait on a teacher's schedule to get their application in.
Choosing Your Program
A quick orientation to the choices in Step 3:
- Foundation Program: the starting point for new students, covering twenty core topics in philosophy, economics, politics, and decision-making.
- Advanced Program: for returning students, and now offered in all four sessions, so alumni can find a session that fits.
- Boarding or day: boarding students live on campus with meals included; day students join every class, activity, and meal.
- Oral Exam Contest: included for Advanced students and available as an add-on for Foundation students in the full two-week program.
All sessions are held at Princeton Theological Seminary. The program is independent and not affiliated with Princeton University.
After You Apply
Once your application is in, the process moves quickly. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and decisions typically follow within about a week. The Dean of Academics personally reviews each application.
If a preferred session is already full, that is not the end of the road. Students can join a priority waitlist by completing the application, or simply choose another session with open spots. The team will walk you through the options.
What Students Go On to Do
The program is a beginning, not just a two-week event. Past students have gone on to create their own philosophy podcasts and, in one case, to author and publish a peer-reviewed article that grew out of a session discussion. The habits of reasoning and conversation built here tend to keep paying off long after the summer ends.
Tuition Grants
Reason & Rationality offers tuition grants, with priority for the children of professional educators and for students already receiving significant financial aid from their school. Qualifying families complete the standard application and then a short grant application, which includes a brief conversation with a school administrator. You can start on the Apply page or ask questions through our contact page.
What You Will Need to Apply
- Parent and student contact details
- The student's school and graduation year
- Program, session, and boarding or day selection
- A refundable deposit, with the current amount on the Apply page
- A teacher recommendation or a graded essay, which can follow after you apply
A Few Tips for a Smooth Application
A little planning makes the process effortless:
- Apply early for session choice. Because review is rolling and popular sessions fill, applying sooner keeps the most options open.
- Have a session or two in mind. Knowing your first and second choice makes Step 3 quick, and gives the team a backup if your top pick is full.
- Line up a recommender in advance. If you plan to use a teacher recommendation, give your teacher a heads-up before you send the unique link, so it does not sit unopened in an inbox.
- Use the essay option if timing is tight. A previously graded paper can stand in for the recommendation, so a busy teacher never holds up your application.
- Remember the deposit is refundable. The deposit that reserves a student's place is refunded if the application is not accepted, so applying early carries little risk.
